The first two potential Vice Presidential candidates that we will take a look at are both Senators from battle ground states. Evan Bayh, a Democratic Senator from Indiana, is a potential number two for Barack Obama. On the Republican side Richard Burr, a Senator from North Carolina, has a chance to be chosen as McCain’s running mate. Both Richard Burr and Evan Bayh bring experience in public service to the ticket. Another positive each politician represents is their selection could have a dramatic impact on securing a victory in a battle ground state. Poll’s from Electoral-Vote.com have Indiana running almost even with Obama have a slight one point lead. In North Carolina it is almost as close with McCain holding a slight four-point lead. Indiana represents eleven electoral votes, while North Carolina represents fifteen. Both candidates are realistic possibilities, but haven’t received a lot of media coverage to date.
Evan Bayh - Born on December 26, 1955 Evan Bayh has served in Indiana politics since being elected as Secretary of State in 1986. In 1988 Bayh was elected to serve as Governor, and was re-elected in 1992 with the highest percentage of the vote in a statewide election in modern Indiana hist
ory. Bayh has been applauded by both Democrats and Republicans in Indiana, and has become a very popular figure in that state. In 1998 Bayh was elected to serve in the United States Senate gaining 64% of the vote, the largest margain ever for a democrat in Indiana. Bayh is a popular politician from a predominantly red state. He has years of experience, and has experience as being in an executive position. A problem that Bayh would present is at fifty-two years old, he is still young. Besides his youth Bayh seems like a safe choice that has many positives. Bayh was initially a strong supporter of Hillary Clinton, but has stated he would accept an offer to run as Obama’s vice presidential candidate.

Richard Burr – Burr was born in Charlottesville, Virginia on November 30, 1955. He graduated from Wake Forest University, and spent seventeen years as a sales manager
for Carswell Distributing Company, a distributor of lawn equipment. He was elected to the House of Representatives in 1995, where he served for five terms. He won election to the United States Senate, filling the seat being vacated by John Edwards in 2004. Burr is a likely choice due to the fact that he would counter many of John McCain’s wekanesses. Burr is extremely conservative, and is a strong and vocal supporter of the Bush administration. This strong consertaive record would help to counter the idea by many conservative’s that McCain is to moderate. Also at just fifty-two years of age Burr would help with the issue of McCain’s age. Early polls show that McCain has a slight lead in North Carolina, but with fifteen electoral votes at stake he needs to assure he will maintain his lead. Burr has stated that he would be more than willing to accept an offer to serve as McCain’s running mate.
