Defeating Obama

Mitch McConnell has stated that his number one priority is defeating Obama. Here's the problem....if by 2012 we're enjoying a robust recovery, Obama wins against any Republican. If the economy continues to be in the toilet Obama loses (unless he's running against Palin.) Will McConnell and the Republicans put country first or defeating Obama first? What incentive does McConnell have to work with Democrats to get the economy back on track? I personally think gridlock is what Republicans want and the harm done to the American people will mean little to them in their quest to make Obama a one term president.
