The latest newsletter by a Republican women's group in Upland, California depicts Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama surrounded by a watermelon, ribs and a bucket of fried chicken, prompting outrage in political circles. The October newsletter by the Chaffey Community Republican Women,
Federated says if Obama is elected his image will appear on food stamps -- instead of dollar bills like other presidents. The statement is followed by an illustration of "Obama Bucks" -- a phony $10 bill featuring Obama's face on a donkey's body, labeled "United States Food Stamps." The husband of the woman responsible for sending out the newsletter says there's nothing racial about it. The woman's daughter says "I eat fried chicken, I eat ribs, I eat watermelon....it's not racial."
I won't make a decision about the woman's motives in sending this out. I will question if this is the best way to gain support for McCain since some of the members of her own group are African Americans.
